Israel Claims Haifa Oil Refinery Targeted in Iranian Missile Strike

Escalation of Tensions in the Middle East

Israel has reported that an oil refinery in the northern city of Haifa was targeted in what it claims is an Iranian missile attack. However, officials have stated that no significant damage was caused to the facility. This incident comes as Iran continues its efforts to retaliate against recent strikes on its energy infrastructure.

In a statement released on Thursday, Energy Minister Eli Cohen mentioned that there was a brief disruption in power due to the attack on the Oil Refineries Ltd. facility. He noted that the power was restored for most customers shortly after the incident. Cohen also emphasized that the damage to the power grid in the north was localized and not substantial. Furthermore, he stated that there was no significant damage to Israeli infrastructure sites during the barrage towards the north.

Iran has been conducting a series of missile and drone attacks across the Middle East since Israel and the United States launched a war against the country late last month. These actions are seen as a response to previous strikes on Iranian infrastructure. This week, Tehran targeted several oil and gas facilities in the Gulf region in retaliation for an Israeli attack on its South Pars offshore gasfield on Wednesday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made a strong statement on Thursday, declaring that his country would show “ZERO restraint” if its infrastructure is attacked again. The Israeli attack on the South Pars gasfield has led to widespread condemnation from various international sources.

Al Jazeera’s reporter in Tehran, Ali Hashem, reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that they had fired missiles towards Haifa and Ashdod, a city in southern Israel. Hashem added that the Iranians claim this is a direct response to the attacks on the South Pars facility. It remains unclear whether the Ashdod facility was hit.

Civilian Casualties and Regional Conflict

On Thursday, Israel’s rescue service reported that four individuals were injured in a rocket attack in Kiryat Shmona, a town located in northern Israel near the border with Lebanon. Medics treated a 60-year-old man with serious shrapnel injuries, a 68-year-old woman with a head injury, and two men in their 20s who also sustained shrapnel wounds.

In addition to its military actions against Iran, the Israeli military has intensified its aerial and ground assault on Lebanon since early March. This has resulted in over 1,000 deaths. The Israeli attacks in Lebanon began after the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel in response to the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, which marked the first day of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Hezbollah has retaliated by launching multiple missile barrages into northern Israel, responding to the deadly attacks by the Israeli military across Lebanon. This ongoing cycle of violence highlights the deepening regional conflict and the increasing number of casualties on both sides.
